Hotels - Restaurants and cuisine |
Downtown :
Mainly along the main street : rue Colbert are located a wide range of hotels, from 3 stars to some boarding houses.
However Diego is a small town, where it is very easy to walk around, you will find good international hotels in any part of the town ( guidebook in english : Lonely Planet and the Bratt ), or inquire to the tourism office either on the Place de la Mairie or down the avenue colbert open 9 to 12 and 15 till 17.30 except on Sunday. On the Bay :
For those who prefer to enjoy a wonderful landscape outside the town you will find quite a few hotels on the seaside of the bay : only 3 km outside the town, in front of the Sugar Loaf are located a 2 stars and the only 4 stars Hotel of the town, a few kilometers further another 3 stars, just before Ramena a few nice hotels, also two bungalows hotels on the Sakalava Bay and one more in Ramena, where also a lot of rest houses are available.
Don’t forget JOFFREVILLE the gate to MONTAGNE D’AMBRE NATIONAL PARK can be a really nice place to stay, there is a nice 3 stars Boutique Hotel in a large Park, one EcoLodge with a beautiful Panorama, some Resthouses or Auberge and even a camping ground with BBQ.
Native cuisine is basicaly made of stew ( beef or fish) served with a huge plate of white rice.
These stews are composed of chunks of zebu meat, rarely chicken(too expensive and reserved for the feasts) cooked with local herbs, water and tomatoes and usually quite salty, people use to eat very salty therefore a lot of hypertension problems among the population. All along the streets at night you will see hundreds of stalls of brochettes dealers (tiny zebu skewers cooked on charcoals, the other main malagasy problem, the charcoal is so much used for cooking that it causes deforestation). These stalls will also provide you some Mango Achar (quite acid) manioc chunk, fried vegetable bananas… Restaurants are the mirror of the population besides french restaurants and brasseries, some italians, one indian, some chineses, and an incredible quantity of Pizzerias. Diego Suarez is a paradise for Sea Food ( Prawns, lobsters, crabs, squids, octopus and many species of fish, but be careful where you eat it ( touristas and Gastroenterite are quite common, if you are not cautious enough) Don’t forget to order some sirloin (filet) or Ribs (cote) Zebu meat is really delicious and very reliable. Vegetables and fruits are looking tiny but don’t forget almost everything you will eat in Diego is ORGANIC at 100%. Pork and mutton are quite rare to find. Chicken are delicious a little bit tough (they are running free all day long trying to escape the cars and to find something to eat) As here poultry and cattles they have to manage by themselves to get some food, nobody really cares for them !!! |
